Australia and New Zealand smart metering and energy data intelligence specialist Intellihub today announced the acquisition of the smart metering assets from Downer’s Spotless Advanced Metering (SAM) business.
The acquisition will see an additional 100,000 on-market meters and embedded meters transfer to Intellihub, cementing its position as the largest and fastest growing metering provider in Australia and New Zealand.
Intellihub CEO Wes Ballantine said Intellihub is now managing 2.5 million smart meters for more than 40 electricity retailers across the two countries.
“Smart meters are a faster, more secure and efficient technology to measure energy use and help transport that data across the energy market,” Mr Ballantine said.
“We are also now looking beyond the meter to provide even greater services and benefits. This includes a focus on better customer service to electricity retailers and their customers.
“Our next generation smart meter enables greater management of consumer energy devices to help households save energy, reduce costs and simplify their energy transition.
“This transaction with Downer, will mean we can offer these services to even more customers over the coming decade.”
Preparing for 2030 accelerated smart meter deployment
As part of the transaction, Downer and its related subsidiary SkillTech will become one of Intellihub’s accredited field service providers, helping to safely install smart meters in homes and businesses across the region.
Intellihub now has contracts in place with 10 large field service providers, helping to install and service more than 40,000 smart meters each month.
Mr Ballantine said this growing capability was required to help transition the energy sector across Australia and New Zealand and help the countries meet their Net Zero Emissions commitments.
“Australia is moving to a complete smart meter deployment by 2030 and there will be a need to replace a significant portion of older meters across New Zealand over the coming decade,” he said.
“This requires the skilled workers to be out there each day to deliver significantly larger volumes of smart meter installation for homes and businesses.”
Smart meters are an increasingly important technology to better manage the growing number of consumer energy devices in homes.
The efficient management of these resources will unlock gigawatts of consumer led renewable energy generation and demand side control.
Intellihub recently acquired leading energy technology company GreenSync, the world’s first digital pool monitoring business Pooled and also is working closely with leading electric vehicle charging software and hardware provider EVSE.
